Translators and Linguists

I need to read the Fitzgerald translation for school, but would it be okay if I listened to the Fagles audio book instead? Is it different, like is the plot the same and the same characters? Thanks.

Translations can differ radically, so I’d suggest you read the Fitzgerald translation or an audio book thereof, because suddenly you may find yourself having read a different "book" than the rest of the class. This is especially true of the Greek classics.

I really like the Google translator, but it doesn’t do Latin. Does anyone know an online translator that does Latin? The fancier the better.

Online translators just can’t handle Latin, evidently because of all the inflectional endings. Your best bet would be to post your specific questions here, where there are several good Latinists to help.

If you are looking for a program that will translate full text, there is no such thing that will do it correctly (grammar rules vary widely between one language and another.)

There are many, free, online bilingual dictionaries however, that are great for word-per-word translations. Just type:
f"ree online english/(whatever language) dictionary"
in your search engine and you’ll see your choices.

I have a friend from Canada whose primary language is french (canadian) which is slightly different From French (France) dialect…Does anyone know of an English to French translator online that uses the Canadian Dialect???

You’ll find no such thing as a Canadian French online translator unfortunately. Standard (written) Canadian French is just like European French with a few exceptions in vocabulary and is not a dialect in itself.

The slang words/forms we use do not constitute another language in itself and therefore will not be found in a common dictionary and if so, then a regular French online translator will be able to translate them.

You can, however, find Canadian French (or Quebec French) ”dictionaries” either online or in bookstores.

Specifically for Japanese translations. I want to be able to translate an entire Japanese website into english. If it’s not a direct website translator, I would like something I could copy and paste a block of text into for translation.

Google is better, as is Altavista, but none of them are really any good. You’ll always get something really amusing and almost completely incomprehensible. The best ones let you guess the topic and some of the content, but they certainly aren’t smooth. If you want to experiment, and you have Firefox, you can get a Fox Lingo add on that lets you choose many sources for translations from many languages to many other languages. Your best option is to ask for a Japanese friend to help you and pay them a little bit, or, if it needs to be perfect, find a professional translator. Sometimes Japanese departments at universities can hook you up with someone who isn’t too expensive.

There will be varying opinions. Each translation has a goal, and each have shortcomings. Some try to use English that is used throughout the world and avoid slang. Some try to use simple English that younger people can understand. Some try to be very literal translating each word the same. Some try to interpret what it is saying. Some try to be easy to read out loud in sermons. Some try to be somewhere in between.

In my opinion, you will do well to avoid paraphrased versions like "The Living Bible", because it goes too far trying to interpret the meaning instead of leaving the text speak for itself. I think it would be a good commentary, or second Bible though. I think you would do well to get a more modern translation since nobody speaks like KJV anymore. I do think KJV is a great translation if you can understand it though.

NIV and NASB are both popular, easy to read and accurate. You might at least consider these. I would encourage you to go to your local Bible bookstore (or Biblegateway.com) and compare several versions of the same passage and judge for yourself.

By the way, someone mentioned the New World Translation. This is created by the Jehovah’s Witnesses. So, if you are not a Jehovah’s Witness, it will not be a good choice for you.
