Translators and Linguists

I am going to Germany as an exchange student but I don’t speak a word of German, I want to buy a translator thats not too expensive. Any suggestions?

unfortunately its hard to find a pocket translator from english into german and vise versa in the US. try amazon or ebay. or you could possibly order it off of a german website and have it mailed here. i had the same issue when i studied in Germany for three months as a foreign exchange student. Fortunately most people speak English(or at least speak a little English so they can help you). try buying a phrase book or german to english dictionary. i bought my pocket translator while i was at a mall in Stuttgart(it was about 15€ or about $20). and contrary to what that other person posted, they WILL help you. most of the time you are trying to find something or someone and you will only need to use one or two words. and sometimes if the person notices your broken german, they might guess you speak english and start talking to you in english(that happened to me a lot).

Sites like Google translator give you the results of English translation in other characters and not in the Roman Alphabet. (Yeah, big help…) I want to know how to translate English words into languages like Arabic or Hindi or Chinese and actually be able to read what the word is, possibly phonetically.

Anyone have any sites that give translation results with Roman letters and not in other alphabets?

I am thinking of relocating to Guadalajara, Jalisco in June of 2009 from Oregon (where I currently am working as a translator English/Spanish) and I am looking for job opportunities as a translator or English teacher and I was wondering if anyone knew of any companies looking for translators I am fluent in all aspects of Spanish and English ie: reading, writing and speaking.

2 problems actually……
1st is this is a dream held by many people. Many also speak english and spanish and rthe down turn in the economy has it even harder to find a job here. Your profession is high competition so it’s a double edge sword for you.
Second will be your FM3 card you will need as your not native Mexican. This is near impossible to obtain.
Google FM3 or Rollybrook.com and read up.

I need to get some documents translated from Arabic to English. I can do it myself but I need an official chop on that. So, where can I find an official translator for Arabic or at least where can I search for one? Courts…?
How much do they charge per page?

I recently had some paperwork certified as true copies by a solicitor firm in KL. The fee was supposed to be $50 (Ringgits) for the first page and $10 per subsequent pages, but if you smile nicely they might wavier the $10 per page fee like they did with me.

I doubt that there are any lawyers/solicitors in Kuching that can translate the paperwork for you, but as you mentioned if you can translate it yourself I think that they would be willing to give it an official chop.

Hankuk university of foreign studies offers the best program in Korea. I believe this is the only program that’s been officially approved in Korea.

As far as I know, most licensed translators in Korea are from this program.

Well, just a good one that actually corrects the vocab and grammar so the "je, tu,.." matches the verb

When I was learning French I always used books because we didn’t have the internet then. I still think it’s the best way.There is an excellent book called "501 French Verbs." It gives the full conjugations of verbs. I would also invest in a good grammar book. If you are ever stuck on something you can contact me as I’ve spoken French fluently since my school days.

In Spanish it is called manualidades, so please do not use translators because they are not accurate and I need to know this for research. If you know any other language and you can help me I would really appreciate it!

Which Indian language has the oldest term for translation? Which was the first text to be translated into an Indian language? Which was the first text translated from an Indian language into a non-Indian one, and vice versa? Which Indian language today has the largest translation industry?

Translation must be ‘lost in the mists of antiquity’ in India. I believe bilingual inscriptions of King Asoka exist. I have an idea he had Buddhist scriptures translated into Greek.

But a good claimant for the first Indian text translated into a modern non-Indian language must be the Bhagavad Gita, into English in 1785.

I don’t want to have to look it up on the web all the time! Even my classmates want to know their name, but I don’t have enough time to search all their names!

Just type in a name and click the 検索 next to the box, then pick which number best matches, and it’ll show you the katakana… It doesn’t work for everybody…
